JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said the construction of the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) in North Jakarta would be completed this month. Thus, the desire of the people of Jakarta to have a stadium will be achieved after 13 years planned by the government.
"The line of policy that we have taken is to finish this and God willing, in March 2022 this stadium will be 100 percent complete. Finally, the 13-year wait has come to an end and JIS is ready to accommodate Jakartans, Indonesians, and citizens of the world to be present in this place," he said in Anies Baswedan's Youtube show, quoted on Monday, March 28.
Anies explained the history of planning the construction of this international standard stadium. It all started with the DKI Provincial Government's plan under Governor Fauzi Bowo or Foke, to turn BMW Park into a sports stadium.
In 2009, plans for the construction of the stadium began. In the same year, the stadium belonging to DKI, the Lebak Bulus Stadium, was demolished because land for the MRT depot would be built.
Then, Fauzi Bowo decided to build a JIS in the BMW Park area. After evicting the illegal buildings there, the construction plan began.
Then in 2014, President Joko Widodo, while still serving as the Governor of DKI Jakarta, again launched the construction of a stadium in BMW Park. However, that time did not go smoothly. The construction of the BMW stadium is still constrained by land disputes.

When Anies served as Governor of DKI, in order to fulfill his campaign promise in the 2017 Pilgub DKI, planning for the construction of the stadium was continued. Anies changed his name to Jakarta International Stadium (JIS).
"Thank God this long process, thank God, we ended the wait to find the end in September 2019 starting with the groundbreaking of the JIS construction, which was planned for completion in December 2021," Anies explained.
Unfortunately, when construction had been running for 6 months, the COVID-19 pandemic occurred in March 2020. Development was hampered. "This has an impact on the development process because some of the logistics that must be sent cannot be sent because they are hampered due to disrupted mobility," said Anies.
Until finally, the construction is targeted to be completed this month. This magnificent stadium was designed with a capacity of 82 thousand spectators. The advantage, JIS is equipped with a roof that can be opened and closed automatically or a retractable roof. Then, there is also a sky-viewing deck with a height of 70 meters.
