DPR Speaker Puan Maharani: IPU Session In Bali Gives Indonesia A Strategic Position

BADUNG - DPR Speaker Puan Maharani said holding the 144th Session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) at BICC Nusa Dua, Bali, on March 20–24, 2022 gave Indonesia a strategic position.

"The IPU in Bali is of course very strategic because as the host, Indonesia can play an active role in discussing and proposing solutions to global problems," said Puan at BICC Nusa Dua, quoted by Antara, Saturday, March 19.

Puan explained that this strategic position can be seen from the role of the Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives who will lead all sessions of the IPU Assembly level in Bali.

"Automatically the Chairman of the DPR RI will lead the entire trial as president of the assembly and of course we hope that through the IPU, Indonesia can lead the achievement of all adopted resolutions to solve global problems," explained Puan.

Thus, Puan will lead the session, which will be attended by 1,000 delegates from 115 IPU member countries.

The main theme that will be discussed in the 144th Session of the IPU is the impact of climate change.

IPU President Duarte Pacheco who arrived at the event location explained that climate change is a real problem faced by all citizens in the world.

Pacheco stressed that his party did not just discuss and discuss the matter, but made concrete concrete actions.

In addition to the impact of climate change, other issues that have become the focus of the IPU's 144th Session include gender issues, youth in politics, and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

"We do not tire of urging all parties to the conflict for an immediate ceasefire," Pacheco said.

Then, another issue that is in the spotlight is the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine.

"Indonesia will prioritize justice in all countries related to vaccine (distribution) because how can we end the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, if not with vaccines that are distributed evenly in all countries," said Puan.

For the first time, Indonesia is hosting the IPU trial.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is a cross-border inter-parliamentary cooperation which is the second largest democratic forum in the world after the United Nations (UN).
