MUI: Secretary General Meeting Cannot Accept Miftachul Akhyar's Resignation Request

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) confirmed that Rais Aam PBNU and General Chairperson of MUI Miftachul Akhyar had sent a letter of resignation, but in a meeting the secretary general decided that he could not accept the proposal.

"According to the decision of the Secretary General's meeting, it has been confirmed that the MUI Chairman's resignation letter has been issued. The Secretary General's meeting has decided that he cannot accept the Ketum's resignation," said MUI Secretary General Amirsyah Tambunan as reported by Antara, Thursday, March 10.

Amirsyah said that based on the decision of the X 2020 National Deliberation, Kiai Miftah was appointed as Chairman of the MUI until 2025. Regarding the resignation, MUI will discuss it according to the organizational mechanism.

"The MUI Leadership Council will discuss in accordance with organizational mechanisms in leadership, plenary and plenary meetings according to the MUI Basic Guidelines and Household Guidelines according to the results of the X National Conference in Jakarta," said Amirsyah.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Fatwa Council Asrorun Niam respects the decision of PBNU Rais Aam Miftachul Akhyar to resign from his position as General Chair of MUI.

"As a student, I highly respect Kiai Miftah's decision," said Asrorun Niam.

Asrorun said MUI would immediately move to consolidate Miftachul Akyar's resignation in accordance with organizational rules.

"(MUI) will consolidate according to organizational mechanisms," he said.

Previously, Miftachul Akhyar stated that he had sent a letter of resignation from the position of General Chairperson of the MUI. The resignation was in accordance with the proposal of ahlul halli wal aqdi (Ahwa) at the 34th NU congress late last year.

"There was a suggestion that I should not hold concurrent positions. I immediately answered sami'na wa atha'na (we listen and we obey)," said Kiai Miftah.
