Responding To Cak Imin's Proposal, PDIP DPP: There Is No Room To Postpone Elections

JAKARTA - The Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (DPP PDIP), responded to PKB General Chair Muhaimin Iskandar who proposed that the 2024 General Election be postponed for the next one or two years for reasons of economic improvement.

PDIP emphasized its political stance that the discourse on postponing the election did not have a strong legal basis and had forgotten the most fundamental aspects of politics. Where it requires discipline and obedience to the constitution.

"The President's oath also states the importance of upholding the Constitution and carrying out all laws and regulations as straight as possible," said PDIP Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto in his statement, Thursday, February 24. On the basis of the provisions of the constitution, Hasto stressed, the constitution mandates General elections are held in a direct, general, free, secret, honest and fair manner once every five years. "Thus there is no room for postponement of elections," he stressed.

According to Hasto, what PDIP conveyed was also in line with President Jokowi's statement which repeatedly emphasized his rejection of various discourses aimed at extending the term of office or postponing elections. Culture is correlated with the quality of democracy. If this periodization culture is disturbed, it will only have an impact on political instability. So instead of thinking of postponing the election, it is better to continue to take steps to consolidate to prepare for the election," said Hasto. Previously, Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar or Cak Imin suggested that the 2024 General Election (Election) be postponed. Because according to him, economic improvement should not be disrupted by election contestation. He found this after receiving input from MSME players and analysts regarding the economic prospects this year.

"From my visit to the region and seeing the positive prospects going forward, this good momentum in the future should not be ignored. Therefore, I see that in 2024 the elections that we plan to hold in February, do not let the good economic prospects It's disrupted because of the election," said Cak Imin at the DPR Building, Jakarta, Wednesday, February 23.

"Hopefully I will pass on my proposal to my friends and party leaders. I propose it to the President. So, if it's true, we'll see if it can be postponed or not," he said.
