Challenges For Emerging Emergency Situations, Jokowi Asks Basarnas To Increase Innovation And Increase Human Resources

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) asked the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) to continue to increase innovation and improve the competence of human resources (HR).

He conveyed this when giving a speech at the National Working Meeting (Rakernas) of Basarnas online today, February 21.

"Participants of the National Work Meeting, our challenges in dealing with emergency situations will be even greater," Jokowi said in his remarks broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube.

To deal with this, Jokowi said, it takes a large team that is responsive, militant, and able to provide fast and appropriate assistance. However, this team also has to increase innovation by utilizing technology.

So, it is hoped that more people can be helped by Basarnas in the future during an emergency situation.

"This is mandatory. SAR technology has developed rapidly and is increasingly sophisticated which can assist, project, and analyze quickly and accurately, and with more precise and more effective handling so that we can save more victims," he stressed.

"Therefore Basarnas must not be left behind in terms of technology, it must quickly adapt to the latest developments in SAR technology," added Jokowi.

In addition, Jokowi also asked Basarnas to improve HR competencies. According to him, each team member must be equipped with relevant expertise.

Basarnas, continued Jokowi, was also asked to continue to ensure the safety of the team working in the field. Thus, the rescue work carried out can be maximized.

Not only that, the former Governor of DKI Jakarta also asked Basarnas to strengthen synergy and collaboration. "SAR work is an integrated work involving ministries, involving government agencies, the TNI, Polri, business entities, community organizations, and other SAR potentials," he said.

"Throw away what is called the sectoral ego. Throw away what is called the sectoral ego, all of which must work together in humanitarian operations," Jokowi added.

Finally, Jokowi asked Basarnas to strengthen prevention, mitigation and anticipation. This step can be done by providing education to massive technical training to the community.

"We have to build awareness so that people are more concerned and are quick to take preventive measures, especially in disaster-prone areas and emergency areas so that a SAR culture and emergency resilient communities are developed," he concluded.
