The 2024 Election Campaign Period Is Proposed To Be Shortened, KPU Considers 120 Days To Be Sufficiently Crowded

JAKARTA - A number of members of the Indonesian House of Representatives Commission II proposed that the 2024 election campaign period be shortened. In response to this, the Commissioner of the Indonesian General Elections Commission (KPU) Pramono Ubaid Tanthowi admitted that his party would consider this matter.

"Regarding the proposal to shorten the 2024 election campaign period, as proposed by several members of Commission II of the DPR RI in the last RDP, the KPU will certainly consider it carefully," Pramono told reporters, Thursday, January 27.

Pramono explained, based on existing regulations, the campaign period was not regulated how long it had to be. What is clear is that the campaign period begins three days after the nomination of candidates and ends three days before the voting day.

What needs to be considered, the election campaign period is related to two stages, namely state administrative disputes (TUN), as well as the auction process, production, and distribution of election logistics.

However, Pramono emphasized that the 120-day campaign period in the KPU draft regulation (PKPU) was already quite solid.

"The 120-day draft in the Phased PKPU draft already requires the consolidation of the dispute resolution process as well as the auction, production and distribution of election logistics," said Pramono.

This is because, from the simulation conducted by the KPU, based on the current regulations, the time required for disputes and logistics is at least 164 days. Disputes take 38 days, while logistics takes 126 days. More specifically, at the dispute stage, if there are election participants or candidates who file a candidacy dispute with Bawaslu and the TUN court, the dispute can only be submitted after the DCT determination.

"Regarding disputes, the authority lies with Bawaslu and the TUN judicial environment," said Pramono.

Then, in the logistical preparation process such as ballots, Pramono said that it could be produced after the determination of the permanent candidate list (DCT) and the TUN dispute were completed.

This is because the KPU must make ballots containing the names, pictures/photos, and the serial numbers of the election participants and their fixed candidates.

While the auction is regulated in the Presidential Regulation on the procurement of goods and services, the procedure must be followed to avoid inefficiency or corruption. In addition, logistics distribution is not only throughout Indonesia, but also to all TPS in 130 Indonesian representatives abroad.
