Deputy Chairperson Of DMI Syafruddin Reveals A Shocking Thing: 65 Percent Of Muslims In Indonesia Can't Read The Koran

JAKARTA - Deputy Chairperson of the Indonesian Mosque Council (DMI) Komjen Pol (Purn) Syafruddin reminded that 65 percent of Muslims in the country cannot read the Koran.

"So if the 223 million Indonesians are Muslim. As many as 65 percent of them, Indonesian Muslims cannot read the Koran and are blind in general," Syafruddin said in a written statement in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Saturday, January 22.

This was conveyed by Syafruddin in the Juz 30 Quran completion activity held by El Medina- Sheikh Ali Jaber Rahimaullah.

On that occasion, Syafruddin reminded about the importance of fighting to eradicate illiteracy in the Koran in Indonesia. The reason, he said, in research conducted as many as 65 percent of Indonesian Muslims cannot read the Koran.

"Only 35 percent of the Indonesian people are Muslims who can read the Koran," he said.

Therefore, Syafruddin together with a number of Islamic youth groups established the Indonesia Damai Mengaji Foundation. In the foundation, Syafruddin served as chairman

"Therefore, we and a team of Islamic youth groups established a foundation called the Indonesia Damai Mengaji Foundation. I am the chairman, while the chairman of the advisory board is Prof. Nasaruddin," said Syafruddin.

Syafruddin said the Indonesian Damai Mengaji Foundation had done a number of things to eradicate illiteracy in the Al-Quran in general in Indonesia.

"There are at least two active foundation activities. First, is to print as many Korans as possible," said Syafruddin.

Syafruddin continued that the second thing the foundation did was to build a massive house to read and study the Koran.

"In fact, three months ago in Makassar, I inaugurated a Koranic house in a narrow alley, where 150 students were former thugs and all of them had tattoos and all of them had memorized chapters of the Koran. So that is what we are fighting for," said Syafruddin.
