Earthquake In North Sulawesi With A Magnitude Of 6.0 Has The Potential To Cause Minor Damage To The Talaud Islands

JAKARTA - Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati said the 6.0 magnitude North Sulawesi (Sulut) earthquake on Saturday morning triggered minor damage in the Talaud Islands.

"Until now there have been reports of the impact of the earthquake, namely minor damage, among others, at the Germita Ayalon Congregation Church in Prince Village, Kabaruan Island, Talaud Islands," said Dwikorita, quoted from Antara, Saturday, January 22.

Damage to residential areas also occurred in Manaida, Panulan Village, Kebaruan District, Talaud Regency. Dwikorita said the earthquake with an epicenter in the sea 34 kilometers south of Melonguane City, Talaud Islands Regency at a depth of 37 kilometers, was a shallow earthquake caused by deformation of the Maluku sea plate.

BMKG monitoring results up to 11.30 WIB showed that there were nine aftershocks or aftershocks with the largest magnitude 4.5.

Based on the results of the BMKG modeling, the earthquake did not have the potential for a tsunami.

The earthquake shock that occurred on Saturday, January 22 at 09.26 WIB was felt on the MMI III-IV scale in Melonguane, with the tremor felt by many people inside the house.

He appealed to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be justified. In addition, to avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged by the earthquake.
