Stepanus Robin, Former Corruption Eradication Commission Investigator Who Is Proven To Receive Bribes For Handling Cases And Sentenced To 11 Years In Prison

JAKARTA - Former investigator of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Stepanus Robin Pattuju was sentenced to 11 years in prison by the Jakarta Corruption Court. This verdict was handed down because he was proven to have received money from litigants at the anti-corruption commission to deal with allegations of corruption.

The KPK appreciates this decision. Although it is one year lighter than the demands of the public prosecutor (JPU), this institution said that the judge independently gave the best decision.

Stepanus Robin Pattuju, who is a former KPK investigator from the police, was sentenced to 11 years in prison. In addition, he had to pay a fine of Rp500 million, a subsidiary of 6 months in prison, and pay replacement money of Rp2,322,577,000.

This verdict was read at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Wednesday, January 12 yesterday.

"Aggravating things, the actions of the defendant as a legal apparatus undermine the order of state administration that is free of corruption, collusion, and nepotism; the defendant's actions do not support the efforts of the government and society which are actively eradicating corruption," said the judge in the trial.

While mitigating, Stepanus has never been punished, polite, and has family responsibilities.

Not only that, in this trial, the application as a justice collaborator or witness to the collaborating perpetrators submitted by Stepanus was rejected by the panel of judges. The reason is that what Stepanus said about the involvement of KPK Deputy Chair Lili Pintauli Siregar and lawyer Arief Aceh is irrelevant.

For information, the name Lili is often mentioned by Stepanus Robin. According to him, the former Deputy Chairperson of the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) also played in a number of cases, including the case of buying and selling positions that ensnared the former Mayor of Tanjungbalai M Syahrial.

However, Stepanus' statement has not been proven. There is indeed a heavy ethical sanction imposed on Lili but this is related to her communication with M Syahrial and abuse of authority.

"At the trial, the defendant has presented a witness for the perpetrator who is collaborating with law enforcement or justice collaborators, which in essence the defendant will reveal the role of KPK commissioner Lili Pintauli Siregar and lawyer Arief," said the judge.

"Against the application, the panel of judges is of the opinion that what the defendant will reveal has no relevance to the "a quo" case and the defendant is also the main actor in this case, so the panel is of the opinion that the defendant's application should be rejected," he added.

In addition, in this trial, Stepanus and his colleague, who is an advocate, Maskur Husain, were proven to have received bribes of Rp11.025 billion and US$36 thousand or around Rp513 million.

The money is related to the management of five cases of alleged corruption at the KPK. One of them is the former Deputy Speaker of the DPR from the Golkar Party faction, Azis Syamsudin and former Deputy Chairperson of the PP Youth Forces of the Golkar Party (AMPG) Aliza Gunado related to the KPK investigation in Central Lampung.

The two of them gave Stepanus and Maskur Rp3,099,887,000 and 36 thousand US dollars, or around Rp513.29 million, respectively.

Regarding the verdict, the KPK appreciates it. Acting KPK Spokesperson for Enforcement, Ali Fikri, sentenced to 11 years in prison, which the judge decided against Stepanus, was a decision taken independently according to the duties and authorities of the judges.

"KPK appreciates the panel of judges who have decided this case independently according to their duties and authorities," Ali told reporters, Wednesday, January 12.

Not only that, but the verdict also proves that Stepanus is guilty. Moreover, Ali said that the basis for the determination of the verdict was in accordance with the demands submitted by the KPK Public Prosecutor (JPU).

"What the panel of judges considered and decided today that the defendant SRP (Stepanus Robin Pattuju) was proven guilty, was mostly in accordance with what was described by the KPK in the description of the prosecutor's indictment," he said.

"While the difference is only in the severity of the punishment," added Ali.

In addition, the KPK also spoke about the rejection of the justice collaborator application by Stepanus. Ali assessed that the judge's decision was correct because the role of the party named by the former investigator was in accordance with the existing facts.

"The roles of the parties as outlined in the request of JC defendant SRP are in accordance with the legal facts," he concluded.
