Restaurant In Sukabumi Burns, Losses Estimated At IDR 3 Billion

SUKABUMI - The fire that scorched the oldest restaurant in Sukabumi City, West Java, Athiam, on Jalan RE Martadinata reached Rp 3 billion.

"According to the restaurant owner's statement, the impact of the fire which scorched almost the entire building was very large, reaching Rp. 3 billion," said Adjat Sudrajat, Head of the Fire Department for the Civil Service Police and Sukabumi City Fire Department.

Not only the building was burned, but almost all of its contents, ranging from furniture, electronics, facilities and infrastructure, could not be saved.

According to Adjat, there were no fatalities or injuries in this fire because the occupants and employees of the restaurant saved themselves.

The owner of the restaurant is still carrying out an inventory of the value of the loss he has suffered. It is strongly suspected that the fire that occurred on Sunday, January 9, just before the turn of the day, was triggered by a leak in the gas stove being used for cooking and then the sparks hit flammable items.

The fire quickly grew bigger and spread throughout the room to the second floor of the restaurant, no doubt this incident attracted the attention of the residents, especially since it was in the center of the crowd plus behind it was a densely populated residential area.

To extinguish the growing fire, six cars and 22 firefighters were deployed, assisted by volunteers, one of them from the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Sukabumi City, trying to extinguish the fire so it does not spread to other buildings and residential areas.

The fire from inside the kitchen quickly grew so that the red rooster engulfed the entire building, even firefighters had trouble reaching the hotspots. The fire was extinguished only a few hours later.

"In addition to the difficulty of penetrating the hotspots, it is possible that the building contained wood or flammable items. From the provisional assumption, the fire was triggered by a leaking stove or gas cylinder and there is no indication that it was due to an electrical short circuit," he said.
