So As Not To Disturb, Yogyakarta City Government Plans To Limit The Number Of Electric Scooters In Malioboro

YOGYAKARTA - The City Government (Pemkot) of Yogyakarta plans to arrange the existence of electric scooters in the tourist area of Malioboro. One of them is by limiting the number and determining the path.

"There needs to be a number limitation so as not to disturb vehicles or disturb pedestrians, which are also quite a lot in Malioboro," said Yogyakarta Deputy Mayor Heroe Poerwadi in Yogyakarta, Antara, Monday, January 10.

Therefore, Heroe asked the electric scooter operator to temporarily stop the rental of the vehicle until further policies are in place. Apart from Malioboro, electric scooters are also found around the Tugu Pal Putih area of Yogyakarta.

According to Heroe, if no arrangements or restrictions are made from the start, it is feared that the number of vehicles will increase and it can disturb other road users.

“For example, for operating hours and routes that can be passed. If you go from Tugu to Malioboro, you must pass pedestrians. Later, we have to arrange which paths are allowed," he said.

If scooter users drive electric vehicles on the road, Heroe is actually worried about the safety of scooter users. "That's why it is arranged through pedestrians. But even passing pedestrians needs to set the path and operating hours," he said.

Heroe confirmed that he had communicated with the Cultural Conservation Area Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) which manages the Malioboro area regarding the policy.

“From initial information, there are two electric scooter operators in Malioboro and one in Tugu. Later it will be recorded again for the next arrangement," said Heroe.

The arrangement and limitation of the number and operating hours of electric scooters in the Malioboro area refers to the policies that have been implemented for odong-odong vehicles in the South Square area of Yogyakarta.
