Pontianak Quarantine Center Confiscates Hundreds Of Chirping Birds

PONTIANAK - Pontianak Class I Agricultural Quarantine Center, West Kalimantan confiscated as many as 251 chirping birds which will be brought out of the province via the Dharma Rucitra 9 Ship at Dwikora Port, Pontianak.

"A total of 251 chirping birds were secured when we carried out departure supervision on the Dharma Rucitra 9 Ship which will depart at 03.00 WIB from Pontianak Dwikora Port for Semarang, Central Java", said Sub-Coordinator for Supervision and Enforcement of the Pontianak Class I Agricultural Quarantine Center, Joko Supriyatno, as quoted by Antara on Friday, January 7th.

He explained that during the surveillance, his party found 29 baskets containing various types of chirping birds as many as 251 consisting of 250 living and one dead.

"In the arrest, the Pontianak Class I Agricultural Quarantine Center officers coordinated with the Pontianak Dwikora Port Police and the crew of the Dharma Rucitra 9 ship", he said.

As many as 251 chirping birds were secured, including 156 kacer birds and one dead, 36 stone magpie, 55 green cucak, two cotton shoots, and two parrots.

He added that the carrier media was not equipped with an HC (Health Certificate) from the Quarantine so it could be said to be illegal.

From the results of these detentions, there are two types of birds (animals) that are protected as regulated in the Minister of Environment and Forestry No. 106 of 2018 concerning the Second Amendment to the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Number P.20/MENLHK/SETJEN/KUM.1/6/2018 concerning protected plant and animal species, including the green cucak bird (Chloropsis sp) and the parrot (Gracula religiosa).

"The bird will then be handed over to the West Kalimantan BKSDA to be returned to its natural habitat", he said.
