Jamaica To Deport Colombian Involved In Assassination Of Haitian President

JAKARTA - The former Colombian military member implicated in the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise will be deported from Jamaica to his home country on January 3, 2022, Jamaica's attorney general said.

The Colombian, Mario Antonio Palacios, 43, is accused by Haitian authorities of being part of a mercenary group that killed Moise in July in an attack on his private home. In the attack, Moise's wife was also injured.

As reported by Antara via Reuters on Sunday, January 2, 2022, Palacios was detained in Jamaica last October and convicted of entering the country illegally from the Dominican Republic.

The Jamaican government has issued a deportation order for entering Jamaica illegally.

However, the island nation does not have a formal extradition treaty with Haiti, the country where Palacios is a fugitive, a police spokesman said.

"The information provided does not link him to the murder and basically he is indicated as a suspect in an attempted armed robbery, without any details", Marlene Malahoo Forte said in a statement to Reuters.

"Our efforts to get further and clearer details from the Haitian government were unsuccessful", he said.

Palacios' attorneys have asked for his client's immediate release from the Horizon Adult Detention Center in Kingston because his archery was unlawful, he said.

Neither Palacios' attorneys nor Haitian government officials have responded to requests for comment.
