Cases Of Child Sexual Violence In West Jakarta Increase In 2021

JAKARTA - West Jakarta Metro Police Chief Kombes Ady Wibowo stated that cases of sexual abuse against minors will increase in 2021 compared to 2020.

"There will be 42 cases of sexual harassment in 2021, while in 2020 there will be 16 cases. The cases that we reveal mostly occur in women and children," said Ady Wibowo at a press conference at the West Jakarta Metro Police Headquarters, reported by Antara, Friday, December 31.

According to Ady, it is not yet known what caused the increase in harassment cases in 2021, but it is certain that the majority of perpetrators of sexual abuse this year were previously victims of abuse.

"We learned from the cases handled that the perpetrators were previously victims," he said.

Ady stated that the West Jakarta Metro Police had difficulty monitoring any predators who had previously been victims of sexual violence and had the potential to target other children.

He is optimistic that there are still many cases of sexual violence and sexual abuse against children that have not been reported, so the police are currently trying to provide education to residents regarding the dangers of sexual violence against children.

"There is still counseling for children and trauma healing that we do for each victim. Of course this is limited by the Police, we need support from all the younger generations," he said.

He also appealed to all parties not to hesitate to report to the police if they found incidents of violence and abuse against children.
