JAKARTA - Belarus and Russia's relations are getting closer amid tensions on the Ukrainian border, with the leaders of the two countries agreeing to carry out military exercises to develop joint aircraft.

During Wednesday's meeting, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the two countries' plans to hold joint military exercises early next year.

"As you might guess, we will hold military (exercise) and agree on their date, in February or March, when they decide," he explained commenting on Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko's remarks at the beginning of the meeting, quoted from TASS December 30.

On the occasion, President Lukashenko asked Putin not to stop cooperation in the military and defense industries.

"I just asked you not to stop our joint training, so that we can continue to set up training centers for our people, first of all, to learn to operate the advanced weapons systems we bought from Russia," Lukashenko said.

As Lukashenko points out, he knows that his proposal to hold joint exercises on the territory of Belarus is being considered.

"I want this decision to be made by you. This will benefit Belarus-Russia relations," he continued.

In addition to joint military exercises, the two leaders of the two countries agreed to continue cooperation between the two countries in the construction of aircraft.

President Lukashenko thanked President Putin for the fact that the Russian side supports cooperation in the aircraft industry.

"We have civilian and military factories in the aircraft construction industry, we can do a lot of cooperation, especially since they (such projects) are in demand by the Russian aircraft industry," said President Lukashenko.

"Of course. Following the results of our meeting (this will be) another order to the government," President Putin said in response to his colleague.
