Gunungkidul SAR Team Evacuates Tsunami Early Warning System Tools

GUNUNGKIDUL - The Search and Rescue Team of the Community Protection Unit Region II Gunungkidul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, evacuated a tsunami early warning system located in the southern waters 8°09'57.1"S 110°32'39.9"E or 3 miles from the coastline.

"We evacuated the tsunami early warning system (EWS) using a jukung boat with a journey of about 2 hours to Baron Beach, from 10.15 WIB to 12.15 WIB," said Secretary of the SAR Satlinmas Region II Gunungkidul Surisdiyanto quoted by Antara, Sunday, December 19.

He said the discovery of the tsunami EWS stems from a report by fishermen from Baron Maryono Beach while catching fish in the south coast area, and seeing floating objects. After seeing the object bobbing in the sea, the curious witness approached the object.

Witness Maryono did not know what it was and immediately contacted the SAR officers at the Baron SAR Post by telephone.

"The Satlinmas SAR officers immediately went to the location according to the coordinates given by the fishermen using jukung boats and jetsky. After that, we immediately evacuated by deploying all personnel and assisted by fishermen in evacuating the tsunami EWS," he said.

Surisdiyanto said his party was still coordinating with various parties regarding the handling of the tsunami EWS.

"We are currently coordinating, we don't know what steps will be taken next, whether we want to return it to its original location, because we also don't know the initial position of this tool," he said.
