Members Of Surabaya DPRD Highlight Light Sentence Case Of Employer Persecution Of ART In Surabaya

SURABAYA - Legislators highlight the light verdict on the decision of the Surabaya District Court (PN) against perpetrators of mistreatment of domestic assistants (ART) by their employers.

"The people of Surabaya monitor and see news about decisions that are not in accordance with their sense of justice. The judge should give a maximum verdict," said Deputy Chairman of Commission B of the Surabaya DPRD, Anas Karno, in Surabaya, quoted by Antara, Sunday, December 19.

The city of Surabaya was recently enlivened by the news that an employer named Firdaus Fairus (53) committed violence against a household member named Alok Anggraini (47). The torture experienced by ART starts from being dried in the sun, being punched, pushed, kicked, to being beaten with a light iron.

The perpetrator's cruel treatment was covered up by sending ART to the Pondok Social Environment (Liponsos) Surabaya under the pretext of having a mental disorder. In the end, the housing security officer found out about the incident and was processed by the police.

Currently, the ART abuse case has entered the final stage of the trial. The Public Prosecutor (JPU) in a trial held at the Surabaya District Court (PN) had filed a 4 year 6 month prison sentence. However, in the final verdict at the Surabaya District Court on Thursday, December 16, the defendant Fairus was only sentenced to prison for two years and three months.

"Considering that the defendant's actions brought suffering to the victim, we hope that the public prosecutor can take legal action against the decision," said the PDIP politician.

According to Anas, cases of severe abuse against ART in Surabaya are often not revealed in the community. For that, he continued, so that similar cases do not happen again in Surabaya, it is necessary to pay attention to law enforcement so that the rights of household members and residents of Surabaya are protected.

"The law should not be used as a tool that is only sharp downwards and blunt at the top. It's a pity for the small community," he said.
