JAKARTA - Spokesperson for the COVID-19 Task Force, Wiku Adisasmito, said that the first positive case of COVID-19 caused by infection with the Omicron variant must be an alarm or alert so that people must remain disciplined in implementing health protocols.

"The discovery of the first Omicron case is a warning that we must remain vigilant by consistently implementing health protocols, without worrying too much," said Wiku in a written statement received in Jakarta, Friday, December 17.

The first Omicron case in the country occurred at the quarantine facility of the Wisma Atlet Jakarta Hospital, which was experienced by a hospital janitor with the initials N. The case was announced directly by the Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin.

The case was known based on the results of the whole genome sequencing analysis received by the Indonesian Ministry of Health on December 15, 2021.

Wiku hopes that the public will not neglect and be careless in implementing the health protocols even though the current condition of COVID-19 cases tends not to increase.

Learning from experience related to the magnitude of the impact that occurred due to the second spike, all levels of Indonesian society must jointly maintain the current controlled conditions, by applying the discipline of health protocols.

Health protocols are the easiest, cheapest, and most effective means of preventing the spread of COVID-19 for the community to do.

The government has also made various efforts to protect the public, including various policy adjustments based on the dynamics of the development of COVID-19, both nationally and globally.

Wiku said that the policy changes from time to time to adjust to COVID-19 conditions showed that the government was committed to enforcing policies solely to protect the Indonesian people from the potential increase in COVID-19 cases.

He asked all elements of society not to be careless and continue to provide themselves with information on the development of handling COVID-19 in Indonesia, so that there are no more violations that have the potential to harm others.

"We ask the entire community to study the applicable policies and adhere to them," said Wiku.

The policy was made indiscriminately and enforced to all levels of society as stated in the Circular Letter of the Task Force for Handling COVID-19 Number 25 of 2021.

Various violations related to procedures for preventing the spread of COVID-19 transmission will be dealt with in accordance with applicable laws. The COVID-19 Handling Task Force will continue to support every legal step set by the authorities.
