BMKG Weather Forecast: Beware Of Potential Heavy Rain Accompanied By Strong Winds

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reminded the public to be aware of the potential for heavy rain that could be accompanied by lightning and strong winds in a number of areas in Indonesia on Friday.

As reported by Antara, Friday, December 17, in the weather early warning system, BMKG predicts areas that have the potential to experience moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds, such as in Aceh, Bali, Bangka Belitung, Bengkulu, Banten, DKI Jakarta.

Then Jambi, West Java, East Java, West Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Lampung, North Maluku.

Then in West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, West Papua, Papua, Riau, West Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, West Sumatra, South Sumatra, and North Sumatra.

Head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati emphasized the importance of water management in dealing with extreme weather due to climate change.

According to Dwikorita, the government needs to prepare various scenarios from the lowest risk to the worst scenario with very high risk, because extreme weather patterns in Indonesia are now much more common than in previous years.

"The phenomenon of cyclones can be said to be very rare in tropical areas such as Indonesia. However, during the last 10 years, tropical cyclones have occurred more frequently. This condition shows that the impact of climate change is really real," said Dwikorita.

Dwikorita explained that usually in Indonesia, only the tail of the cyclone is affected, but now the seeds of the cyclone have appeared and formed in the territory of Indonesia.

Lastly, Tropical Cyclone Seroja caused flash floods and landslides in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) in April 2021.
