Ministry Of Education And Culture Asks Unsri Rectorate To Complete Cases Of Student Sexual Harassment

PALEMBANG - The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) asked the rectorate of Sriwijaya University (Unsri) to complete cases of sexual harassment by applying the spirit of collaboration involving all elements of students.

The Inspector General (Irjen) of the Ministry of Education and Culture and Research and Technology Chatarina Muliana said, with collaboration between the rectorate and student elements such as the Student Executive Board (BEM) or other student organizations on campus, the benefits are not limited to only helping to resolve cases that are already in process.

But in the future it can also be used as a preventive measure, so that no more female students become victims of sexual harassment on the Unsri campus.

"Solving this problem can be done by building collaboration with the BEM so that the atmosphere on campus can be conducive again," he said after holding a coordination meeting with the rectorate at Unsri Bukit Besar Campus, Palembang, quoted by Antara, Monday, December 13.

According to him, in this case Unsri is very likely to be a role model for national universities because they are considered responsive in responding to reports of sexual harassment experienced by their students, namely by immediately forming an adhoc team.

The decision to form an adhoc team or Unsri ethics team, he continued, was very appropriate because the solution was indeed the responsibility of the university.

Moreover, it has been strengthened by the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Research and Technology number 30 of 2021 concerning the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (PPKS) in the university environment.

So for that, he ensured that the Ministry of Education and Culture would continue to provide assistance to Unsri in handling this harassment case.

"We will also assist Unsri in implementing the Permendikbud because the rules are still relatively new and can still be multi-interpreted. Don't let it cause other unwanted things later," he said.
