East Java Ministry Of Law And Human Rights Proposes 493 Prisoners To Get Christmas Remission

SURABAYA - The Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in East Java proposed that 493 inmates or prisoners receive special Christmas remissions.

The Head of the Regional Office of the East Java Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Krismono, said that the inmates who were proposed to receive Christmas remission were spread across 35 prisons/detention centers throughout East Java. Currently, the number of residents of prisons/remand centers in East Java has reached 27,962 people based on data as of December 8, 2021.

"Because it is special, the remission granted is a maximum of two months and a minimum of 15 days," said Krismono, in Surabaya, Monday, December 13.

Christmas special remissions are only given to prisoners who are Christian. Not only that, inmates who are entitled to remission must meet administrative requirements. As well as having served a minimum sentence of six months.

"It is calculated from the date of detention until Christmas in 2021. In addition to Christmas, special religious remissions are given on Eid al-Fitr, Vesak, Nyepi, and Chinese New Year," he said.

Krismono said that the number of inmates who received remission meant that the guidance from the prisons/detention centers of the East Java Ministry of Law and Human Rights was getting better. Because, at the same time, it becomes an indicator of the behavior of prisoners who are getting better.

"If the guidance is good, all kinds of potential riots can be prevented. Thank God, during 2021, prison conditions in East Java are relatively safe," he said.

Anas continued, this remission does not indicate a penalty sale. However, in accordance with the spirit of correctional with the aim that prisoners quickly return to society and their families.

"So they can live a better life," he said.

The amount of remission obtained depends on convicts who have served a sentence of 6-12 months receiving 15 days of remission. Meanwhile, prisoners who have served 12 months or more, in the first to third year, get 1 month remission.

Meanwhile, in the fourth and fifth years, the criminal period is granted a remission of 1 month and 15 days. In the sixth year and so on get a remission of 2 months. Additional remissions can also be given to inmates who are considered to have served the state and assist with official activities in prisons/remand centres.
