Alert For Cyber Attacks, Commission II Asks KPU To Ensure Sites Are Not Easily Hacked

JAKARTA - Simultaneous general elections are confirmed to be held in 2024 and the stages will begin in 2022. Although, the government and the General Elections Commission (KPU) have not yet decided on the exact month of the five-year celebration. Regarding the election, Deputy Chairman of Commission II of the DPR RI, Luqman Hakim, asked the KPU to ensure that the information technology system on their website is safe. This is so as not to be easily hacked by irresponsible people. This was revealed by Luqman when responding to the case of hacking the official website of the East Java KPU (East Java) which occurred recently. Where on the East Java KPU page displays posts related to the suicide case of a college student in East Java, Novia Widyasari.

"As an election organizer, the information technology system owned by the KPU must be ensured to be safe from various forms of attacks and break-ins," said Luqman in Jakarta, Thursday, December 9.

The reason, continued the politician from the National Awakening Party (PKB), a strong information technology system is closely related to public trust in the performance of the KPU. Moreover, during the last general election, the KPU website was down.

"What's more, if it is related to information on the results of the General Election and Regional Head Elections," said Luqman.

So that this kind of hacking case does not happen again, Luqman also suggested to the KPU to cooperate with related parties such as the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kemkominfo) and the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN). In order to build cooperation with IT security companies that are recognized in the world and to carry out testing of information technology systems before they are officially used by the KPU.

"If necessary, make an open competition to test attacks or break-ins, so that if there are still gaps (bugs) they can be fixed early," said Luqman.

Luqman reminded that it is important to anticipate early so that socio-political chaos will not occur in the future.

"It must be anticipated. There should be no socio-political chaos due to the loss of public confidence in the information on election results that will be managed by the KPU," said Luqman.
