BMKG: High Waves To Rob In Manado Affected By Seamless Coastlines

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that the occurrence of coastal flooding or rob in Manado City, North Sulawesi was influenced by the location of the seamless coastline.

Seamless coastline, meaning that the coastline has no boundaries so that it immediately becomes part of a city located on the beach.

"Manado will have a huge impact because it is seamless between the coast and its territory", said BMKG Deputy Meteorology Guswato in a press conference quoted by Antara, Wednesday, December 8.

Guswanto said this caused high waves to push seawater towards the mainland. In this case, the seawater enters the shopping center which is located right on the beach or causes other areas to be submerged.

"These areas should have a barrier between the waters and the land. For example, use concrete or abrasion-resistant plants", he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Center for Maritime Meteorology, Eko Prasetyo, said BMKG predictions for the next three days, Manado waters will have very high waves ranging from 4-6 meters. Then if it moves to the shoreline it can be reduced to 1.5-2 meters.

"This has an impact when it coincides with the tide phase. So it's not always only in the tide phase so that when the ocean waves push during high tide, they can enter the mainland", said Eko.

Previously, tidal flooding occurred in the Manado City area, North Sulawesi Province. The incident that occurred on Tuesday, December 7, at 18.00 WITA had an impact on 34 heads of families (KK) or 113 people.

The Manado City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported that no residents were displaced due to the incident.

The tidal flood submerged three villages in three sub-districts, namely, South Titiwugen Village in Sario District, Karangria Village in Tuminting District, and Malalayang Village in Malalayang District.

The tidal flood also hit one of the Mega Mall Manado shopping centers, causing several vehicles parked on the edge of the area to be hit by the waves. In addition, 21 residential housing units were also affected.

According to the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) of Operations Control Center (Pusdalops) report, Tuesday, December 7 at 21:59 WIB, the condition of the tidal flood had begun to subside. This is in line with the receding seawater.
