SURABAYA - The Surabaya City Government anticipates flooding by building a water channel that is directly connected to the sea on Kedung Cowek Street, Gading Village, Kenjeran District, Surabaya City.

"The work has been in progress for the last four days, 40 percent of this has been completed, the plan is to complete it in two weeks," said the Head of the Surabaya City Public Works and Pematusan Department (DPUBMP), Erna Purnawati, quoted by Antara, Monday, December 6.

According to him, the plan for the construction of the canal will take two weeks, so it must close part of the road.

Erna explained that the construction of this channel is to follow up on complaints from residents in the Gading Village area. The area often has puddles of water and it takes a long time to recede when it rains.

"Therefore, the Surabaya City Government has made a new channel to be connected to the water channel that leads to the Suramadu Bridge," he said.

In the process of working on the canal on Kedung Cowek Street for four days, there were no significant obstacles.

Even though the PDAM water pipe was blocked for a while, the drinking water pipe has been properly resolved, so the work can be continued for the next few days.

"If there are problems, God willing, there will be no. As for utilities, it's a normal thing, there is a drinking water pipe, but that has been resolved," said Erna.

The installation of the water channel on Kedung Cowek Street, continued Erna, will later be directed to the Suramadu Bridge water channel and empties directly into the sea, so that when there is a puddle in the Gading Village area and the surrounding villages, it can be resolved directly through the water channel.

"Because if it flows towards the Kenjeran water channel, the water flow will not be handled properly, so we made a 'shortcut' (connection) so that the water flow flows towards the Suramadu Bridge," he said.
