200 Hectares Of Agriculture Failed To Harvest Due To The Semeru Eruption

LUMAJANG - Head of the Lumajang Regency Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Agus Setiawan noted that around 200 hectares of agricultural land in the area were confirmed to have failed to harvest due to the lava from the eruption of Mount Semeru.

Agus said the hundreds of lands were in Pronojiwo and Candipuro sub-districts, Lumajang regency.

"This is still an initial record in the two sub-districts, where there are garden plants, mountain slope plants and river flows. All of them are affected," Agus said as quoted by Antara, Monday, December 6.

For commodities, said Agus, including Paddy, Palawija and Sengon. Another area of land that cannot be recorded, Agus said, is coffee, because farmers have not been able to go up and confirm whether their coffee plants have died or can still be saved.

"If the coffee is on a slope, but because it can't go up to the top, our fellow farmers in Oro-Oro Ombo Village can't tell us whether the planting is still intact or not," he said.

As for animal husbandry, Agus, who is also the Chair of the Pancasila Youth MPC in Lumajang Regency, said that many livestock died and could not be saved, such as cows and goats.

"But indeed during the evacuation, many of the livestock did not have time to be brought because of the eruption and the sudden eruption of Mount Semeru's lava," he said.

He said the cattle that died from the lava from the eruption of Mount Semeru were in the villages of Sumber Urip, Sumber Mujur, Oro-Oro Ombo and Supit Urang.

"Indeed, there were some who were successfully evacuated, but more could not be evacuated due to sudden events. Like earlier this morning, at around half past 04.00 WIB, the lava flow increased again so that the livestock could not be evacuated," he said.
