Tomorrow, President Jokowi Will Visit Lumajang To Review The Latest Conditions After The Semeru Eruption

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo is scheduled to see firsthand the victims of the hot clouds falling from Mount Semeru (3676 masl) in Lumajang district, East Java on Tuesday, December 7.

"The President will make a working visit to Lumajang to see firsthand the current condition of the Semeru eruption disaster," said Head of the Presidential Secretariat Heru Budi Hartono, quoted by Antara, Monday, December 6.

Mount Semeru, which is located in two regencies in East Java, namely Malang and Lumajang regencies, experienced an eruption on December 4 at around 15.00 WIB. The mountain emitted incandescent lava, rumbling sounds and thick gray smoke.

"Tomorrow he departs from Halim Perdanakusuma in the morning, and will spend the day at the Lumajang district and its surroundings," said Heru.

President Jokowi plans to review a number of points, including the posts established by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the Governor of East Java, the TNI and Polri.

"And of course the public kitchen that has been prepared by the minister of social affairs and maybe because it's not too far from the command posts there is a hospital where currently there are 2 or 3 victims affected by hot clouds," said Heru.

President Jokowi is also scheduled to provide assistance from him directly to the victims of the Semeru hot cloud.

Based on BNPB data, dozens of people died after the eruption of Mount Semeru. Meanwhile, there are tens of people with serious injuries who are currently being treated at hospitals and health centers.

The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Lumajang Regency reported that 5,205 people were affected by the spread of hot clouds since Saturday, December 4 and 1,300 people were displaced.

The Regent of Lumajang Regency has determined the status of Emergency Response to the Impact of Hot Clouds and Mount Semeru Falls for 30 days from December 4 to January 3, 2022.
