SURABAYA - East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa has instructed the closest residents to evacuate around Mount Semeru in Lumajang Regency to be safe and secure.

"Currently, there is an increase in the activity of Mount Semeru. Residents can evacuate to be safe," said Khofifah, quoted by Antara, Saturday, December 4.

Khofifah through her Instagram account also posted a video showing the situation of the increase in mountain activity as high as 3,676 meters above sea level (masl).

"I received a similar video from the Regent of Lumajang, BPBD, and the surrounding community," he wrote.

Governor Khofifah said the local BPBDs had docked, including the team from the East Java BPBD.

"The Regent of Lumajang has moved to the location and God willing, tonight I will go to the location. Please try and pray that all is well," said the first female governor in East Java.

Meanwhile, the East Java BPBD sent a team to assist the Lumajang Regency BPBD in evacuating the affected residents around the highest volcano on the island of Java.

"The East Java Province disaster agency and TRC PB BPBD Lumajang went to the location for assessment and evacuated residents around Mount Semeru," said Head of BPBD East Java, Budi Santosa when confirmed.

BPBD Lumajang, he said, also directly coordinated with local village officials to carry out evacuation steps.

Budi Santosa explained that based on initial information, there had been an increase in the activity of Mount Semeru in Supiturang Village, Pronojiwo District, Lumajang Regency.

"Today's chronology at around 15.00 western Indonesia time, there has been an increase in the activity of the Semeru Volcano accompanied by hot clouds of avalanches," he said.
