BMKG: Earthquake Activity In Indonesia Increases Since November

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that earthquake activity in Indonesia had started to increase since November compared to what happened in October.

"The results of BMKG monitoring during November 2021 showed that 980 earthquakes occurred in Indonesia in various magnitudes and depths," said BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Coordinator Daryono in a written statement quoted by Antara, Friday, December 3.

Based on monitoring data, 980 earthquakes have occurred in various variations in magnitude and depth. This shows an increase compared to earthquake activity in October which occurred 844 times.

Daryono explained that earthquake activity during November was dominated by small earthquakes with a magnitude of less than 5.0 and occurred 969 times. Whereas in last October, the number of small earthquake activities reached 831 times.

"Significant earthquakes with magnitudes above 5.0 occurred 11 times or decreased compared to October which occurred 13 times," he said explaining further earthquake activity.

The BMKG stated that the active earthquake zones in Indonesia during November 2021 were in 10 seismicity clusters, namely Aceh-Nias, Bengkulu-Lampung-Sunda Strait, South of Banten-West Java, South of Yogyakarta-East Java, Lombok-Bima-Sumba, Sigi. -East Luwu, South-North Minahasa, Maluku Sea, Ambon-Seram, and North Papua.

Meanwhile, earthquakes with shocks felt by the public during November 2021 occurred 49 times, a decrease compared to October which occurred 71 times.

During November 2021, there was one destructive earthquake, namely an earthquake in Oh, North Seram, Central Maluku with a magnitude of 5.7 centered off the coast at a distance of 16 km West of O, Central Maluku which damaged more than 26 houses on November 4 .
