Puan: Indonesia Must Invite Developed Countries To Overcome Climate Change

JAKARTA - The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, said that Indonesia must invite developed countries to continue to be committed to tackling climate change.

"Indonesia must invite developed countries to continue to be committed to tackling climate change. There needs to be a shared awareness that a 'green economy' is an investment strategy for the future," said Puan in a written statement quoted by Antara, Thursday, December 2.

Puan assessed that global efforts were needed to address climate change through more inclusive and green development. He said that global countries need political will to increase their emission reduction ambitions and take adaptation steps through green development strategies, which could be a breakthrough in the G20 forum.

"Big countries must unite in tackling emissions. So international cooperation must be emphasized on green economy investment, and disaster resilience systems," he said.

Puan agreed with the government's mission to make Indonesia's leadership in the G20 to fight for the aspirations and interests of developing countries.

He emphasized that developed countries must be the leaders in reducing emissions and must provide assistance to developing countries in efforts to 'green' the Earth. "Both from the financial side, to the technical side to support mitigation and adaptation efforts in developing countries," he said.

In addition, Puan supports the government's commitment to encourage the issuance of concrete actions during the 2022 G20 Summit.

According to him, Indonesia as the head of the G20 is said to need to raise the issue of green or low-carbon development and vaccine justice.

"The chairman of the G20 Indonesia has a mission so that the world can come out of the crisis better and more resilient. Regarding the topic of sustainable economic development, Indonesia must support the world in implementing a global green development strategy in an effort to reduce emissions," he said.

For the first time, Indonesia was elected as the holder of the G20 chair, since the main forum for international economic cooperation was formed in 1999.

The G20 Summit with the theme 'Recovering Together, Recovering Stronger' will be held in Bali in October 2022, the opening ceremony for the chairmanship of the G20 Indonesia 2022 will be held in Jakarta, Wednesday night, December 1.

Puan assessed that the push for the use of renewable energy as an energy transition step should continue to be made on the global agenda.

According to him, the energy transition is needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. "We must inherit a better world for future generations, a safer, more just and more prosperous world," he said.

According to him, strengthening world solidarity to tackle climate change as well as build it sustainably, and the commitment of developed countries to help developing countries is a must.

Puan supports the issue of health security and resilience being raised at the G20 in 2022, one of the important points that must be voiced by Indonesia is the issue of justice for the Covid-19 vaccine.

"Vaccine equity is also an issue that the House of Representatives continues to raise in several international forums, including myself. We must work together for vaccine justice for all people around the world," he said.

The issue of vaccine even distribution was brought back to him at the 143rd Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly. The international parliamentary forum was just held in Madrid, Spain a few days ago.
