JAKARTA - Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) Soerjanto Tjahjono revealed that the cause of accidents on toll roads is often caused by tired drivers.

"Many accidents on toll roads are caused by drivers experiencing fatigue and sleepiness," said Soerjanto during the 'Toll Road Safety' discussion in Jakarta, Tuesday, November 30.

Soerjanto said that based on data, generally accidents occur between 00.00 WIB in the morning and 13.00 WIB in the afternoon.

However, there are two phases when drivers usually experience drowsiness when driving on toll roads, namely from 00.00 WIB until the early hours of the morning, and from 10.00 WIB in the morning until 13.00 WIB.

According to him, in this time span, there is the potential for a decrease in the vigilance of motorists, causing micro sleep.

"Based on these statistics, it is most often ten in the morning until one in the afternoon because I am sleepy," he said, quoted from Antara.

Soerjanto appealed to motorists, especially those who are traveling long distances, to be more honest with themselves when experiencing fatigue.

He advised motorists to rest in the nearest rest area to avoid accidents.

"Many drivers drink energy drinks to make them feel fresher, even though when they are tired and sleepy, the medicine is sleeping," he said.

He added that his party also suggested the establishment of a rest area, which is really comfortable for motorists to use as a place to rest.

The existence of these resting places has been proven to reduce the number of accidents on toll roads.
