Former Investigator Stepanus 'Case Broker' Proposes JC, Deputy Chairperson Of KPK Insinuates Revocation Of BAP

JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Alexander Marwata said that the application to become a justice collaborator (JC) is the right of each defendant, including former investigator Stepanus Robin Pattuju.

Stepanus is a defendant in the bribery case handling the case. He is suspected of receiving bribes from a number of parties in the KPK, one of which is former Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian Parliament, Azis Syamsuddin.

"When submitting (JC) it is the right of each defendant. The decision will be made, usually at the time of reading the charges. So, we'll just have to wait for the investigators and prosecutors to make their recommendations," Alexander told reporters, Friday, November 26.

This decision will not necessarily be made by the KPK Public Prosecutor (JPU). He said there are a number of things that will be considered, including the attitude shown by Stepanus during the trial.

However, Alexander had time to insinuate how Stepanus suddenly withdrew the minutes of examination (BAP) in the trial. He said that the inconsistency of this statement would certainly be a consideration for the prosecutor's team.

"The prosecutor must have seen the trial process, what kind of attitude the person concerned had, what kind of investigator he was when he gave statements," he said.

"Is the statement consistent with the trial, for example. Some of the people involved withdrew if I'm not mistaken, the BAP. That would certainly be our concern to decide on the JC," added Alexander. Previously, Stepanus withdrew his BAP when examined by KPK investigators. The statement that he withdrew was related to the giving of money from Azis Syamsuddin and former Deputy Chairperson of the PPP Youth Forces of the Golkar Party, Aliza Gunado.

He said this when he was a witness for lawyer Maskur Husain who was sitting as a defendant in the same case.

In this case, Stepanus Robin was accused of receiving money from various parties. When carrying out his actions, he was assisted by lawyer Maskur Husain and they worked from July 2020 to April this year.

The receipt of money by both occurred in a number of places and was related to a number of cases. One of the receptions made was from the Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Azis Syamsuddin, and a private party named Aliza Gunado. The two men gave Rp3.09 billion and US$36 thousand.
