Killing And Selling Elephant Ivory, 5 Defendants Sued By Public Prosecutor Prosecutor's Office In East Aceh 54 Months In Prison

ACEH - The Public Prosecutor (JPU) of the East Aceh District Prosecutor's Office has demanded five defendants for the killing of a Sumatran elephant found without a head with a sentence of 54 months or four years and six months each.

Prosecutors Harry Arfhan and M Iqbal Zakwan read out the demands at the trial at the Idi District Court, East Aceh Regency which was held virtually, Wednesday, November 24. The panel of judges was chaired by Apriyanti and accompanied by Ike Ari Kesuma and Zaky Anwar as member judges, respectively.

The five defendants are Rinaldi Antonius bin A Karim Burhan, Jainal alias Zainon alias Dekgam bin Yunus, Soni bin Sanusi, Jeffri Zulkarnaen bin Fauzi Umar Badib, and Edy Murdani bin Mahmud.

The five defendants attended the trial from the Idi Penitentiary, East Aceh Regency, where they had been detained so far.

In addition to demanding imprisonment, the Public Prosecutor also demanded that the defendants pay a fine of Rp. 100 million each, a subsidiary of six months in prison.

The Public Prosecutor stated that the defendants were conclusively proven guilty of violating Article 21 Paragraph (2) Letter a of Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning Conservation of living natural resources and their ecosystems.

After listening to the prosecution's demands, the defendants through their legal advisors stated that they would file a written defense memorandum. The panel of judges continued the trial on December 1, 2021.

Previously, the carcass of a male Sumatran elephant was found without a head in the PT Bumi Flora area in Jambo Reuhat Village, Banda Alam, East Aceh, last Sunday, July 11.

From the results of the investigation, the East Aceh Police arrested five perpetrators. The involvement of the perpetrators includes being the executor or the one who kills and cuts off the elephant's head. And buyers of protected animal ivory.
