Beware Of Extreme Weather During Year-end Holidays

JAKARTA - Extreme weather has the potential to overshadow a number of parts of Indonesia, nearing the end of 2019. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded that heavy rain has the potential to fall in most parts of Indonesia, including tourist destinations. This potential will occur during the week during the Christmas 2019 and New Year 2020 holidays.

"In the past week, there has been a significant distribution of rainfall in most parts of Indonesia," BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati delivered a statement from the Minangkabau Meteorological Station in West Sumatra to journalists at the BMKG Jakarta Office via teleconference on Monday, December 23.

According to him, this condition occurs due to the latest regional and local scale atmospheric dynamics, including the Asian Monsoon which has begun to show significant activity.

The activity of the Asian monsoon causes an increase in wet air masses, the formation of convergence patterns, slowing and bending of winds in several regions, and warm sea surface temperatures that support the growth of rain clouds in Indonesia.

Therefore, BMKG urges residents to be aware of the potential for extreme weather and heavy rain in areas such as Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, Bengkulu, South Sumatra and the Bangka Belitung Islands.

As well as, West Java, Central Java, East Java, North Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, West Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, Maluku, West Papua and Papua.

In addition, Rita said, along with the arrival of extreme weather, high waves have the opportunity to approach some coastal areas in Indonesia.
