JAKARTA - The determination of the voting day for the 2024 Simultaneous Election is not yet clear. The two debated proposals for date determination by the government and the General Elections Commission (KPU) have yet to come to a conclusion.

The government is known to have proposed that the 2024 Simultaneous Elections be held on May 15. Meanwhile, KPU RI intends to hold it on February 21.

The chairman of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) DPP, Mardani Ali Sera, said that the KPU must be more assertive in determining the voting day independently.

If the meeting point is not reached, according to him, the Indonesian KPU can use its authority to determine the voting date in accordance with Article 347 paragraph (2) of Law 7/2017 concerning Elections.

"In this case, the KPU needs to be more assertive in determining its attitude. Because according to Law 7/2017 concerning Elections, the KPU has full authority to determine the voting day and various stages of the election," said Mardani to reporters, Tuesday, November 16.

The member of Commission II of the DPR reminded that the certainty of the voting date for the 2024 Simultaneous Elections is very important so that participants can know for sure when to start carrying out political activities.

"The certainty of the 2024 election date allows all parties to work with a clear time frame," he stressed.

Mardani hopes that the KPU RI can carry out the instructions of the Election Law to prove that they are independent and free from intervention.

"At the same time confirming that the KPU institution is an election management body that is national, permanent, and independent," he said.
