JAKARTA - A four-meter-tall carrion flower of the Amorphophallus gigas species grows in a community garden in Koro Malintang, Tanjungraya District, Agam Regency, West Sumatra.

Mayor of Nagari Koto Malintang Naziruddin in Lubukbasung, said that the carcass flower grows in the cocoa garden belonging to Erizal (50) and is not far from where a large medang (Litsea Sp) tree grows.

"This carcass flower has grown twice in that location and this four meter high carcass flower was found two months ago," he said.

He said the carcass flower had been fenced off so as not to be disturbed by residents. In the future, the location will be well fenced, because this can be an attraction for residents to come.

"This can be used as a tourist destination because the flowers are rarely found by residents," he said Thursday, November 4.

Meanwhile, the Head of Agam Natural Resources Conservation Resort (KSDA), Ade Putra, added that the Amorphophallus gigas carrion flower is protected by Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and their Ecosystems.

"This rare flower will fully bloom in the next few days and after that it will wither," he said as quoted by Antara.

He added that the Agam KSDA Resort will go to the corpse flower location to measure the height, stem diameter, install warning boards and educate the local community so as not to damage it.

The Agam KSDA Resort has also discussed the location as an Essential Ecosystem Area (KEE), because it is rich in ecosystems, such as having large wood and others.
