JAKARTA - American music producer and Taylor Swift's loyal collaborator, Jack Antonoff, launched a scathing criticism of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the music industry.
Through a post on his personal Instagram account, the 13-time Grammy winner openly called those who use AI to create art as "godless prostitutes" who only destroy the essence of creativity.
Antonoff emphasized that the process of creating music is not merely producing sounds, but a ritual that involves the soul, emotions, and physical dedication that cannot be replaced by algorithms.
According to him, efforts to optimize the creative process so that it becomes faster and more efficient actually eliminate the main purpose of why someone is driven to make music.
The 42-year-old man is skeptical of technological trends that seek to cut down on the process of writing songs, recording, and stage performances that should be sacred.
"What we're doing has become an ancient ritual. You don't have to write the music, you don't have to record it, and you don't have to bring a band to play it," Antonoff said, quoting the caption of his upload, Friday, May 15.
"But for us, the idea of optimizing what we do is a total failure in understanding the main point of what forced us to do this from the beginning," he added.
He also added that he and other fellow musicians never looked for ways to make their work faster or easier, because the real value lies in the magic and uncertainty of the process.
The Bleachers frontman also gave a message to "bad actors" who try to exploit art for instant profit through AI technology. Antonoff considers the AI music phenomenon just a "strange shortcut" that will eventually filter out who the artists are who are really honest and who are just producing digital garbage.
He predicted that future generations would still return to conventional ways which he called a form of devotion to God through the work of human hands.
"So, for all those who are so excited about new ways to fake the making of art, feel free to drive straight to the cliff. We're really happy to see you go. Future generations will engage in the ancient ritual of writing, recording, and performing as it comes to us from God," said Antonoff.
"There is nothing more shameful than to think that there is a way to optimize the sacred process," he concluded.
