JAKARTA - British singer and songwriter Raye is scheduled to receive the Hal David Starlight Award at the 55th annual induction of the Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF).
The award, which is dedicated to talented young talent, will be handed over on the night of the award ceremony held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, New York City, United States (US), on June 11.
The Hal David Starlight Award was first introduced in 2004 in honor of the late SHOF Emeritus Chairman, Hal David, for his dedication to supporting young songwriters.
Later, Raye will be paired with a line-up of top musicians who have received similar awards, such as Taylor Swift, SZA, Post Malone, and Ed Sheeran.
The SHOF's decision to choose Raye is not without reason. The musician, whose real name is Rachel Agatha Keen, is known as a vocal figure in fighting for the rights of songwriters, especially regarding fair compensation in the streaming era.
SHOF chairman, Nile Rodgers, gave deep praise for Raye's ability which was considered very honest and authentic. Rodgers called Raye a songwriter who was admired by the late Hal David for his ability to touch the deepest side of his listeners.
"Raye is the type of songwriter that Hal David would have adored - someone who writes from the deepest, most vulnerable parts of herself, yet somehow makes the whole world feel seen in the process," Rodgers said, quoted by Variety, Thursday, April 16.
"What makes the story so extraordinary is that long before he became a superstar in his own right, he was quietly shaping the sound of a generation," he continued.
Furthermore, Rodgers highlighted Raye's track record of writing songs for big names such as Beyoncé through the song "Bigger", Charli XCX, to Little Mix.
"This award not only shines a light on his talent - it illuminates an incredible journey from the very beginning. Congratulations Raye - you really are a representation of what great songwriting is all about," Rodgers added.
Throughout 2024, Raye's career was at its peak. He made history by winning six Brit Awards in one year, including the Album of the Year category.
Recently, he also released his second album, "This Music May Contain Hope", which was praised for its courage to explore various musical genres ranging from pop, R&B, to dance with complex lyrics but still emotional.
