SERANG - National Music Day 2026 is commemorated as an effort to advance the industry and music of Nusantara. For Minister of Culture Fadli Zon, this is an opportunity to encourage Indonesian music to appear stronger on the world stage.
He conveyed this at a commemoration at the Banten Provincial State Building, Monday, March 9.
In front of musicians and music industry players who attended the event held by the Indonesian Republic of Artists, Songwriters and Musicians (PAPPRI), Fadli assessed that the wealth of Indonesian music is a huge capital that has not been fully utilized.
Indonesia has about 1,340 ethnic groups with hundreds of traditional musical instruments. This diversity gives birth to a very wide range of music colors, from tradition to contemporary.
"Indonesian music, from tradition to contemporary, has great potential to continue to grow. We hope that the ecosystem will get better through collaboration between musicians, artists, cultural workers, and governments at various levels," said Fadli in an official statement, March 10.
According to him, music can be a force of Indonesian culture in the international world. A number of Indonesian musicians have performed on various global stages and opened up opportunities for a new wave of Indonesia.
"We hope that Indonesian music will be one of the frontliners of culture in the international world. We want to see the emergence of an Indonesian wave from our music," he said.
The government, said Fadli, also continues to encourage the preservation of traditional music through various programs, including National Talent Management, so that the younger generation remains connected to the roots of culture.
Minister of Creative Economy Teuku Riefky Harsya who delivered a speech via video assessed that Indonesian music has great power in the creative economy sector as well as the nation's soft power.
"Indonesian music has the wealth of culture and creativity of the young generation that is extraordinary to become a creative economic force as well as soft power in the world," he said.
Minister of Manpower Yassierli, who was also present, added that music is not only a cultural expression, but also an economic sector that has a direct impact on the welfare of creative workers.
Meanwhile, Banten Governor Andra Soni reminded that March 9 was chosen as National Music Day because it coincided with the birthday of Wage Rudolf Supratman, the creator of the Indonesian national anthem, Indonesia Raya.
PAPPRI Chairman Tony Wenas said that the idea of National Music Day had been advocated by his organization since 1997 before it was finally determined through Presidential Decree Number 10 of 2013.
The 2026 National Music Day commemoration was also filled with musical performances from SNADA and singer Ita Purnamasari, as well as the traditional art of Banten Terebeng Gede which closed the series of events.
