"I have a hard time with that. There was a period after he passed where I really struggled to acknowledge how strange it was when other people felt they had a part of your grief," Styles said while appearing as a guest on the latest episode of The Zane Lowe Show.
"I have a very strong feeling about the death of my best friend. But suddenly, there is an awareness that there is a desire from others for you to convey it in a certain way, as if if it is not done, it means that you do not feel what you really feel," he added.
For Styles, losing Payne was not just losing a colleague, but losing a figure who had similarities in life's journey with him.
He remembered Payne as a person who had the best heart and always aspired to be the best version of himself.
This heartbreaking event prompted Styles to do some deep contemplation about his future and how he should value the time he has left.
"It's hard to lose a friend. It's hard to lose any friend, but it's much harder to lose a friend who is so similar to you in so many ways. I saw someone with the kindest heart who just wanted to be great," the 32-year-old musician said.
"It was a really important moment for me to look back at my life and say to myself, 'Okay, what do I want to do with my life? How do I want to live my life?' And I think the best way you can do to honor your friends who died is to live your life to the fullest. He was a very special person and it's very sad," he added.
