JAKARTA - Soulfly's main character and ex-Sepultura vocalist, Max Cavalera, bluntly reveals another side of his creative process in composing a musical work.
Even though he has been in the rock music industry for decades, this Brazilian musician admits that he still sees the process of writing lyrics as an unpleasant burden.
Max did not deny that writing lyrics for his songs was the most avoided part. For him, this activity does not provide the same satisfaction as when he was exploring distortion through the guitar.
"I love singing it. I enjoy singing, especially on Soulfly's latest album, 'Chama'. The album is a record where I'm back hitting myself in the studio to really feel the songs. Even if you get bruises, it's all part of the experience - scratching yourself to get that goosebumps," Max Cavalera opened up about his creative process, in a recent interview with Peter Kerr from Rock Daydream Nation.
Even though he enjoyed the process of recording vocals that were physically complete, Max still stood by his stance that stringing sentences into lyrics was still a difficult job. He likened the task to an academic burden that had to be completed reluctantly for the completeness of a song.
"But honestly, yeah, it feels like homework. It's boring. It's not the thing I like the most. I'd rather spend time with my guitar, writing riffs. That's where I really like it, I really enjoy it," said the 56-year-old musician.
"But it's a bad necessity. You need lyrics. But honestly, honestly speaking to you, I don't like it. It's the least liked part of the whole recording process; lyrics are the least I like," he continued.
However, Max's dislike of writing lyrics is exactly the opposite of his children. In the development of the album "Chama", he received great help from his children. He even praised his children's ability to have a deep interest in diction and literacy.
"On this album (Chama), my sons helped me with the lyrics. And some of their lyrics are very good, amazing, and I really like singing them," he said. "And then there are others who like it. Like my son, Igor - he said he adored the words. He is a book writer, so he loves words."
For information, Soulfly's 13th album titled "Chama" has officially been released on October 24 through the label Nuclear Blast Records. In this project, the involvement of the Cavalera family is very thick, where the son, Zyon Cavalera, acts as co-producer and drummer, while Igor Amadeus Cavalera fills the bass line.
