David Bayu's Opinion Regarding Permission To Bring Songs

JAKARTA - Songwriter David Bayu shared his views on permission to perform a song. He said the permit depends on the context of using his copyright.

According to him, permission for songwriters is mandatory if it is in the context of mechanical rights, but he questions the efficiency of permits if they are in the context of performing rights, especially in music performances.

"If for example (the creator of the song) is an overseas person or for example we want to sing the song Rolling Stones, when I have to DM or Whatsapp Mick Jagger," said David Bayu at Pondok Labu, South Jakarta, Wednesday, March 12.

The former Naif vocalist also gave an example from the experiences of several Indonesian bands that have performed abroad.

"For example, yesterday there was a musician who had performed abroad, there was a band called FOS ... Slank had a gig outside, from the side of the event asking for the titles of the song. Later the event will pay royalties to the creator (via local LMK). And the mechanism is already running like that. It's like that outside," said the 48-year-old musician.

David felt that a clearer and more assertive application abroad could be used as an example for Indonesia. He has no problem with permits, but does not agree with ways that are outside the existing provisions.

"If there is a permit for all kinds of things, it has to be there, it's definitely kulo nuwun. But if you suddenly bang, we get confused too. For example, suddenly we're finished singing, then we're called, "Eh, you sing my song, okay? Pay, a few tens of millions. Wow, that's a bit confused, we're also as singers," said David.

"It's not that we don't want to. Even if the law is definitely for you to pay like this, we will follow it. But if there are parties that we can trust for us to entrust the creator's right, then we are more comfortable to carry it out," he continued.

Furthermore, David also admitted that he was often contacted via direct message (DM) for permission to perform his songs. However, he never replied to these messages.

"I want to be confused one by one, if I reply, everything will be like an admin driver, I will," said David. There is already a publisher, and I am also included in the Collective Management Institute. So, there is already an LMKN that collects too.
