JAKARTA - Yamaha India has quietly stopped the production and import of the Yamaha YZF-R3 and MT-03. A number of Yamaha dealers in various regions of India confirmed that the two motorcycles are no longer available and mark the end of the two mid-class models in the local market for a while.

The YZF-R3 and MT-03 entered India as CBU (completely built-up) units and were positioned as Yamaha's entry into the mid-range performance segment. However, this strategy resulted in high selling prices, which limited demand.

As reported by Bikewale, Monday, December 15, throughout the marketing period, the sales volume of these two motorcycles was recorded low. When launched, Yamaha listed the R3 at a price of 4.65 lakh rupees (Rp85.3 million) and the MT-03 4.60 lakh rupees (Rp84.4 million).

Earlier this year, Yamaha had cut prices quite aggressively to 1.10 lakh rupees, followed by an additional 20,000 rupee cut after the GST revision. However, this move has not been able to significantly boost market interest.

With this discontinuation, Yamaha's performance line in India is now left with the R15, MT-15, and the newly launched XSR 155 in the entry level segment. Even so, Yamaha is rumored to be preparing the latest generation of the R3 and MT-03 which are expected to be relaunched in India around mid-2026, with design and feature updates.

Regarding specifications, the Yamaha YZF-R3 full sport fairing is equipped with a 321 cc parallel twin engine, liquid-cooled, with a DOHC configuration. This engine is capable of producing power of around 42 PS and torque of 29.5 Nm, channeled through a six-speed manual transmission equipped with an assist and slipper clutch.

In terms of the frame, the R3 uses a diamond frame with an upside down front suspension and a monoshock rear suspension. The braking system relies on discs on both wheels that are equipped with dual-channel ABS.

Meanwhile, the Yamaha MT-03 uses the same engine base as the R3. The main difference lies in the naked bike concept carried by the MT-03. This motorcycle comes with a higher handlebar and a more upright sitting position.
