JAKARTA - Mercedes-Benz is bringing the C-Class to a new chapter. The mid-sized sedan, which has long been known as one of Mercedes' sales backbone, is now available in a fully electric version, complete with a large battery, fast charging, and a cabin screen that almost fills the dashboard.

The Independent, quoted on Monday, June 1, reported that the electric C-Class was built on a new platform. Mercedes still maintains the old character of the C-Class, which is comfortable, smooth, and easy to use daily. The difference is that this car now comes with much more serious electric technology.

The new model uses a 94 kWh battery with a range of up to 470 miles or about 756 kilometers. In optimal conditions, a 10-minute charge can add up to 202 miles or about 325 kilometers of range thanks to the 800-volt electrical system.

Mercedes also installed a multi-source heat pump to save energy and maintain cabin comfort. The company claims that at minus 7 degrees Celsius, the cabin can warm up twice as fast as the regular engine model, with energy consumption about half.

From the outside, the electric C-Class looks smoother and more aerodynamic. The roof is coupe-style. The back is made more firm. In front, the grille has more than 1,000 illuminated elements. Mercedes wants this car to immediately look different from the gasoline C-Class.

The most striking part is in the cabin. Mercedes installed a 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen that stretches across the dashboard. This screen combines driver information, entertainment, and features for passengers.

The system uses MB.OS, Mercedes' new operating platform that can receive remote updates. This means that new features can be added without the owner having to come to the dealer.

The interior is also made more luxurious. There is a massage chair with ventilation, a sophisticated audio system, and a panoramic roof with ambient lighting and 162 illuminated star elements. The electric C-Class cabin clearly does not want to be just a sitting room, but a small showroom on wheels.

For driving, Mercedes has prepared a rear wheel steering of up to 4.5 degrees. This feature makes the turning radius shrink to 11.2 meters, useful when maneuvering in narrow spaces. The AIRMATIC air suspension is also prepared to maintain long-distance travel comfort.

The car is also equipped with a generative AI-based MBUX Virtual Assistant, which can understand voice commands more naturally. The navigation uses augmented reality, a digital display that overlays on the road image, as well as a route planning specifically for electric cars.

The practical side is still maintained. The electric C-Class has a 101-liter rear trunk and front storage space. The towing capacity reaches 1.8 tons.

Mercedes-Benz Chairman Ola Källenius called the electric C-Class the most powerful and sporty model ever made in the C-Class family.

"Customers will get a combination of performance, comfort, dynamics, and intelligence. This car also offers driving pleasure and an incredible real-world range," Källenius said, quoted by The Independent.

The electric C-Class will launch first in the United States. Other markets, including the UK, will follow later. Full pricing and specifications have not been announced.
