JAKARTA - Nissan introduced the latest generation of the Nissan X-Trail as a hybrid family SUV for the 2027 model year at a global strategy conference held in Yokohama, Japan. This launch is part of the manufacturer's big move to strengthen its electrification line and reorganize its business direction in the future.
The model was introduced at the same time as the arrival of the latest Nissan Juke EV. On the same occasion, Nissan also confirmed the return of the Nissan Skyline sedan and the Nissan Xterra off-road SUV, which is planned to be launched by the end of the decade.
As the backbone of global products, the new generation X-Trail which is known as the Nissan Rogue in the United States market will be equipped with the latest version of e-Power hybrid technology. This system has previously been used on the Nissan Qashqai compact SUV in a number of markets.
Full details on specifications to global launch schedules, including for the Australian market, will still be announced in the next few months. However, sales in the United States are expected to begin at the end of this year as a 2027 model.
Nissan CEO and President Ivan Espinosa, considers the e-Power technology on the X-Trail to be an important bridge to pure electric vehicles. According to him, this system still provides a typical electric car driving experience without sacrificing mileage flexibility.
"The competitiveness of our products will be strengthened through the next generation of Rogue Hybrid e-Power," said Espinosa, quoted from Drive, Thursday, April 16.
"Nissan's innovative e-Power series hybrid technology expands the adoption of electrification, provides a core platform that delivers an electric vehicle-like driving experience and creates a natural bridge to fully electric vehicles," he continued.
The new X-Trail and Rogue Hybrid e-Power are global core models featuring Nissan's unique electric motor drive system that delivers strong hybrid efficiency with the agile driving character given by electric motors. Interestingly, all of them do not need to be charged.
"The US will provide a stable advantage and a foundation for sustainable growth, with the ambition to return to an annual sales of one million units in fiscal year 2030," said Espinosa.
This step was taken amid the challenges still faced by Nissan. After carrying out a major restructuring in 2024, the company is still grappling with global sales decline trends. The latest data recorded global sales in February 2026 at 245,601 units, down 7.4 percent compared to the same period last year.
The launch of the latest X-Trail is part of a new strategic vision titled "Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life". Through this approach, Nissan is trying to strengthen the scale of the business while creating long-term stability.
As part of its efficiency, Nissan has cut the number of global models from 56 to 45 and is focusing development on three key markets, namely the United States, Japan, and China, which are projected to account for around 80 percent of total sales.
In addition, the X-Trail is also one of the main models that will adopt the 'AI Drive' technology. This artificial intelligence integration is designed to improve the safety system and vehicle control, so that the driving experience becomes more intuitive.
Not only that, Nissan also showcased the future direction of its products through three other models, namely the return of the Skyline as a performance icon, the Xterra for the United States market, and the Juke EV which is focused on European consumers.
