JAKARTA - Last year was a difficult period for many car manufacturers playing in the Chinese market. Competition is getting tighter, while local brands are moving so fast to bring electric cars with advanced technology and aggressive prices.

This condition is most felt by Western manufacturers whose electrification strategies are not fast enough to catch up with the local market rhythm. In the midst of this pressure, General Motors (GM) chose not to raise its hand.

The American automotive giant is actually agile, especially through the Buick brand which is still one of GM's mainstays in China. GM is said to have started to phase out a number of electric car projects whose sales are slow and based on the Ultium platform, then shifted its focus to a new platform called Xiao Yao which is more tailored to the needs of the Chinese market.

The move now brings a new signal, one of the latest Buick models using the Xiao Yao platform has been leaked through documents from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). As reported by Insideevs, Monday, January 12.

The car is suspected of being a serious challenger in the mid-size premium crossover segment, the hottest segment in the Bamboo Curtain Country. MIIT is an important stage before the vehicle gets homologation and is officially sold in China.

The MIIT document usually contains patent-style images and basic details such as dimensions, engine configuration, to power output. However, information such as price, mileage, battery capacity, and energy consumption has not appeared in the document.

From the leak, the Buick Electra E7 is believed to be the production version of the Electra SUV concept introduced last year in China. The design is neat and modern, still has Buick's character, even though the touch of the full-length rear lights gives a different feel than the Buicks that have been known for Envista, Envision, and Enclave.

In terms of size, the Electra E7 is in between the compact and mid-size segments. The car has a length of around 190.2 inches and a width of 75.2 inches, slightly narrower and shorter than the Chevrolet Blazer EV. However, it reaches 65.9 inches in height, making it look taller.

The Buick Electra E7 is reportedly set to debut as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). Meanwhile, its sibling, the Electra L7 sedan, is already available in an extended-range EV (EREV) format, where the engine acts as a generator to charge.

According to MIIT data, the Electra E7 will use a 1.5-liter engine that works with an electric motor with 221 hp. If using a turbo engine, the combined output of this hybrid system is estimated to reach around 375 hp.

However, the size of the battery has not yet been revealed. The Xiao Yao platform itself is developed to be flexible, supporting PHEV, EREV, to pure EV, so that Buick can adjust products to the fast-moving trends in China.

The Electra E7 seems to be not just a new model, but part of GM's big strategy to turn things around in China. 2025 is said to be a period of revival for GM, after sales of its electrified vehicles increased sharply in the fourth quarter.

GM recorded a 22 percent growth in combined sales of EVs, PHEVs, and EREV in China. This surge was also driven by Xiao Yao-based models such as the Electra L7 and the Encasa MPV.
