JAKARTA - Toyota has just launched the bZ3 Smart Home Edition in China, an electric sedan that has stolen the spotlight because its price tag is very affordable. This model is marketed starting at 109,800 yuan or around Rp. 262 million.
The Toyota bZ3 is the result of Toyota's collaboration with the FAW Group, and from the start it was designed as an exclusive product for the Chinese market. This Smart Home Edition version is an expansion of the model that was first launched in 2022 and received a significant update in 2024.
In terms of price, the bZ3 Smart Home Edition comes in two variants, the Joy type is priced at 109,800 yuan, while the Pro version is marketed starting at 129,800 yuan or around Rp309 million. As reported by Autoevolution, Saturday, January 3.
At that price, the bZ3 could actually be the cheapest electric car in the United States, if it is marketed there, especially in the midst of the death of the new car segment under 20,000 US dollars.
For comparison, Nissan has stopped production of the Versa, which was previously the cheapest car in the US with a starting price of 18,330 US dollars. Mitsubishi Mirage also officially said goodbye at the end of 2024, after two years ago it was still sold with a price tag of 16,695 US dollars.
In terms of technology, Toyota equips the bZ3 Smart Home Edition with the Momenta 5.0 driving assistance system which already supports Level 2 features. To support this system, Toyota installed a total of 32 sensors, consisting of one LiDAR on the roof, five millimeter wave radars, 12 ultrasonic radars, and 11 cameras.
All of these sensors are supported by a chip with computing power up to 544 TOPS. Refreshment is also visible in the exterior design, the front now adopts Toyota's latest "hammerhead" design language, while the taillights are changed from horizontal to vertical models.
Toyota also added a new color option, Dark Cloud Green. The dimensions of this car have not changed, it has a length of 4,725 mm, a width of 1,835 mm, a height of 1,475 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,880 mm which is quite a typical proportion of a modern electric sedan.
In terms of performance, the Toyota bZ3 Smart Home Edition uses a single electric motor on the front wheel. The Joy variant produces 181 hp of power, while the Pro version is more powerful with an output of 241 hp. For energy sources, the Joy variant is equipped with a 49.9 kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate battery from BYD.
Toyota claims this car can travel up to 517 km based on Chinese test standards. Meanwhile, the Pro variant carries a Blade 65.3 kWh battery that can travel up to 616 km on a single charge.
Entering the cabin, the modern feel is strong through the 15.6-inch horizontal touch screen, an additional 12.8-inch screen, a digital instrument panel, ambient lighting, to an AI-based voice assistant. Toyota ensures that the bZ3 Smart Home Edition will soon enter the mass production stage, and will be sold to consumers in China in the first quarter of 2026.
