JAKARTA - Since its debut in 2023 the Crown FCEV Sedan was presented as part of Toyota's broader efforts to diversify alternative fuel mobility. Now the car is starting to offer a glimpse into how hydrogen can be used in everyday transportation.

Quoting from the Carscoops page, Friday, December 5, starting with a taxi conversion, the Crown Sedan FCEV fleet has explored the streets of Tokyo and is estimated to reach around 200 vehicles by the end of March 2026.

Each car stands out with a black livery, blue graphics, and a typical Tokyo H2 sticker along its side. Meanwhile, the cabin is equipped with a full taxi function, such as an additional GPS unit, a tariff meter, and a transparent partition behind the driver's seat.

Passengers behind have extensive leg space, tablet screens on armchairs, separate touchscreens for temperature settings that are integrated in the middle handband, and chairs with a built-in massage function.

One of the taxi drivers praised the car's greatness because its acceleration was smooth and quiet and smooth driving was the plus value, but it was rather difficult to control on a narrow urban road.

"I've never driven a car this good before," said one taxi driver.

According to Toyota, the taxi initiative aims to help explore the optimal balance between supply and demand for hydrogen.

"The initial step is extraordinary with significant implications for large-scale social implementation," said TMC CEO Koji Sato.

Previously, Toyota introduced a police car Crown Sedan FCEV designed for the Fukushima prefecture, a region affected by the nuclear disaster in 2011.

Both taxi models and the police continue to use the standard Crown Sedan FCEV engine. The electric motor installed on the back produces 180 hp and 300 Nm torque power, powered by Mirai fuel cells.

Hydrogen is stored in three high-pressure tanks, providing impressive range cars up to 820 km (510 miles) per refill.
