JAKARTA - Ten climbers are reported missing after an avalanche hit Broad Peak, one of the highest mountains in the world, which is in the Karakoram Mountains, Pakistan.
The group of climbers was led by Nirmal "Nims" Purja, a famous climber from Nepal who is also a former member of the military.
In a post on Instagram on Thursday night (30/7) local time, the non-governmental sports organization Alpine Club of Pakistan stated that the international expedition consisted of one American citizen, one Chinese citizen, one Omani citizen, and five climbers from Nepal.
"The Alpine Club of Pakistan received a very worrying report about a snow avalanche that hit the climbing team on BroadPeak, Karakoram Mountains, around noon today," the organization wrote, as reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Friday, July 31.
The President of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, Irfan Arshad, along with senior management continues to communicate with local government authorities and related agencies to facilitate the search and rescue operation as soon as possible.
"Every effort is being made to ensure that the available helicopter support and rescue resources can be deployed as soon as possible, taking into account weather and operational conditions," the statement continued.
Purja was in Pakistan to continue the Hat-Trick Project, a program to conquer 14 mountains with an altitude of over 8,000 meters and the Seven Summits three times, shortly before the avalanche occurred.
In early July, Purjamendaki Mount Gasherbrum II in Pakistan without using additional oxygen, also recorded the 57th ascent to the 8,035-meter-high mountain.
Purja was born in Dana, a small village in Myagdi District, western Nepal. He served for six years as a Gurkha soldier and 10 years in the British Special Forces.
