Following Market Trend, Tesla Has Released Teaser For Model YL, A 3-Row Version Of Model Y, To Be Launched In China

JAKARTA - Tesla has released a teaser for the Model YL, which is expected to be a longer-slung Model Y. The teaser was posted on Tesla China's official Weibo page.

Tesla's strategy follows a trend adopted by other major Chinese manufacturers, such as BMW, Audi, VW, and Mercedes-Benz. It's known that the long-slung version of a car in China is not driven by technical necessity, but by very specific market demand and commercial advantages. This is a form of global brand adaptation to local consumer culture and habits.

As reported by Paultan on Thursday, July 17, the teaser shows the Model Y's side profile and a slightly different rear emblem design, which is expected to be available in a three-row configuration.

Tesla China likely decided to release the teaser today because the Model YL design has also been published by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) as part of its regulatory filings.

MIIT data reveals the Model Y L is 4,976 mm long and 1,668 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,040 mm. For comparison, the current Tesla Model Y "Juniper" measures 4,790 mm in length, 1,624 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,891 mm. This represents an increase in wheelbase of approximately 149 mm.

The Tesla Model Y was previously available with a three-row option, but again, that was only an option and did not increase the wheelbase. With the arrival of this model, that option is expected to be discontinued.

Tesla China has not yet opened orders for the Model YL on its website, and this is expected to happen soon.
