JAKARTA - Currently, many young Indonesian animators are involved in international science fiction and animated film projects. Even though the quantity has increased, according to animator Rini Sugianto, Indonesian animators are still not as many as animators from other Asian countries with professional careers in the animation world.

Several Indonesian animators who have penetrated the international world include Griselda Sastrawinata who co-produced Moana and Frozen 2, Ronny Gani in The Avengers and Avengers: Infinity War, to Rini Sugianto who participated in the film project The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of Unicorn and Missing Link .

"There are quite a lot of Indonesian animators compared to my time when I was just starting out," said Rini through the Tintin Indonesia Community webinar, Saturday, quoted from Antara.

"It's just that, when compared to other countries, (Indonesia) is still small. Animators from Korea, India, China, and Japan are also very many," said the animator who now lives in California, USA.

When asked about competitiveness, Rini did not deny that the competition in the world of animation is quite tough. Moreover, every country or state has different standards and career paths for this animation field.

"It is very competitive. The competition is very high, especially to enter a large studio, it is very difficult. There are many good ones, there are also many good junior animators," he said.

However, Rini said that the opportunity to pursue a career as a professional animator in the international arena is not impossible.

Based on his experience in the United States, he assesses that studios and animator seekers in the country do not care where the animator took his education, as long as he has a good portfolio.

"In the US, we do not see which animator has graduated, all the work results or portfolios are seen. Want high school graduates, if the portfolios are good, they are hired," said Rini.

"The most important tip, put the best work in our portfolio. For example, while studying animation, we made 10 clips, and what we think is the best is only two clips, yes that is included," he continued.

Rini added, "We are judged based on the worst work. So give us two of the best works. Even if (duration) is short it's okay, rather than (duration) it's not good."
